The popularity of the gym podcast has risen sharply in recent years. Due to the convenience, portability, and privacy of the medium, these audio shows have become an effective way to stay motivated and focused during your workout routine. Whether you’re running on the treadmill or lifting weights in the free weight section, a great gym podcast can help you take your workout to the next level while also keeping you entertained during boring exercises like planks or wall sits. In this article, we list out our picks for the 8 best gym podcasts of 2022!

Nerd Fitness:

Nerd Fitness is a great podcast for anyone who wants to get in shape but doesn’t feel comfortable going to a traditional gym. The show, hosted by comedian and former IT guy Steve Amp, also has no shortage of workout advice, motivation tips and life lessons. Each episode is usually focused on one Newbie Tuesday segment and four or five different workout routines Classic Content Fridays. This combination makes it easy to digest in small doses. And if you don’t have time for an hour-long podcast (which is rare), there are shorter 15-minute workouts that take advantage of all 20 different programs that NIP has offered over its decade-long history.

Gymnastic:

This podcast hosted by Brad Chosen fled, Alan Aragon, and James Besieger covers a range of topics relevant to every fitness enthusiast—so much so that one could argue it's aimed at lifters and bodybuilders in particular. The show features interviews with specialists on an array of health-related topics (e.g., movement screens, nutrition) as well as podcasts with industry experts who've created their own success in various areas (e.g., Dan John). While you're likely to have heard their names before, Stronger by Science regularly introduces listeners to relatively unknown exercise scientists who are making waves in their respective fields. It's basically gym nerd paradise. Each podcast offers useful insights that you can use to take your workouts and nutrition to another level.

Stronger by Science:

This podcast has quickly become one of my favorites. The production quality is excellent, it’s professionally edited, and there are high-quality sound effects added at just the right times (I know, I know... It sounds like a small thing, but many gym podcasts have terrible audio quality—it’s important!). This podcast does a great job interviewing professional trainers about what works for them in terms of developing their clients. Overall, Stronger by Science is one of my favorite gym podcasts to listen to because it has always been helpful and packed with good information that makes me want to train harder. Definitely worth a listen!

Listening to Music While Exercising:

When going to a gym to exercise, some people bring their i Pods with them and listen to music while they’re on the treadmill or elliptical machine. This distracts you from how much time you’ve spent exercising. Instead, try listening to an audio book or a podcast about a topic that interests you. With all your attention focused on your subject matter rather than on time spent exercising, you can focus on making progress toward any health goals that you may have set for yourself. A good way to find interesting podcasts is to go directly to iTunes and search gym podcast. Once there, click subscribe next to any podcasts that interest you and have new episodes released frequently. If you don’t want to pay for a subscription service, check out our list of free podcasts.

Finding a Mentor at the Gym:

In some cases, there are coaches or people at your gym who are incredible motivators and can help you set goals, make progress and live a healthy lifestyle. But, if you want to get one-on-one guidance and push yourself farther than you ever thought possible, finding a mentor is a smart way to go. Mentors don’t need to be experts in every area; they just need good intentions. If your goal is losing weight, looking better naked or living healthier overall—someone who wants those things for you can help guide you on that journey with their support and encouragement. You'll have someone who knows what it's like to be in your shoes, so they'll understand exactly what you're going through and how to get through it.

Best Apps to Use at the Gym:

While you’re working out, listening to music on your Smartphone can provide a boost to your mood and motivation. Music has been shown to improve athletic performance too, but not just any music will do. There are tons of audio files available on your phone that you can listen to, but not all are created equal. In fact, some research shows that certain genres might actually hinder performance while others help it improve. Here’s what kind of workout music you should use at different times during warm-ups, classical music boosts coordination; pop songs work well during high-intensity workouts; slow songs with low tempos reduce fatigue.
